translate by using WikipediA - beta 0.05

So you discovered Twikilate, but what is it?

Twikilate is an attempt to translate words by using the WikipediA and the Wiktionary.

The concept is simple; WikipediA has many articles in many languages. Twikilate searches your input on the WikipediA in the 'From language'. When a page is found it will look for pages in other languages. When the 'To language' is available it will return the word in the requested language.

Furthermore it will return a list with translations in other languages it has found. If nothing is found on the WikipediA, a second search is done using the Wiktionary. The search on the Wiktionary is still very limited. It will be improved in coming versions of Twikilate.

Is Twikilate better than other online translation pages?

Probably not. These other translation services use their own dictionaries. Depending on the size and quality of the dictionary you will be better off with services like Logos, Interglot, Babel Fish, Google Translate, and the like.

But .. Twikilate will give you something else that you will not find on those sites (except for Logos):

  • Translations for many, many languages (all the languages that have their own WikipediA).
  • Multiple translations for a search. Useful if you need as many translations for a word as you can get.
  • It gets better every day. The WikipediA is growing everyday, so Twikilate will be more successful in finding your translations.
I hope you will find this useful.
